The Project

The NEREIDE (NEw Reading Experiences In the Digital Ecosystem) research project investigates how reading practices are changing within the digital ecosystem. Moving beyond the opposition between formats, the project examines how readers combine analog and digital tools, developing forms of “augmented” or hybrid reading by using the smartphone as a companion to reading and enriching their engagement with the text through the search for online resources and explanatory or supplementary content. A behavior that is both individual and social, taking place through platforms, annotations, reading groups, and shared spaces.

NEREIDE thus proposes an updated theoretical and methodological framework for understanding reading in the current context of hybridization between analog and digital, highlighting the complexity and dynamism of contemporary readers’ behaviors.
